Sultana and Marion, Arkansas

Sultana on fire--April 27, 1865.  I stopped in at Marion, Arkansas to learn about that town's connection to the steamboat explosion that resulted in the deaths of about 1800 persons, many Andersonville prisoners trying to make their way home. I learned that the wreck of the Sultana is buried under a nearby farm field and that the town will host an exhibit on the Sultana on March 6 to March 12, 2012.  I also talked to one of the descendents of a man who helped rescue many of the survivors of the Sultana tragedy.  One soldier from the 82nd Ohio was on the Sultana and survived.  This may be the basis for a sequel to Hiram's Honor.
